Photo to Pet Portrait Collage
Jump into this fun and relaxed workshop by creating a pet portrait of your favorite furry friend. Starting with an enlarged photo, Jane will guide you step-by-step through this project-based class. You will learn how to create a pattern suitable for fabric collage, along with Jane’s signature technique that uses no fusible products or pattern pieces. To help you achieve a successful portrait, the workshop will cover fabric selection, value and contrast, background design, and stitching techniques. Students may choose to work in either a realistic or abstract color palette. Jane will also include small, confidence-building exercises focused on color, along with ideas for other collage applications and create a fun, improvisational background. The collage will be stitched and finished after class. Students have the option to use one of Jane’s patterns if preferred.

Floral Painted Appliqué on Silk
Andrea is inspired by the natural world. Learn her technique for realistic floral imagery painted onto silk fabric. Choose between 2 workshop projects: Into the Haze of the Mystic or Begonia Swirl. Most materials will be provided (Lab Fee $150.) Andrea will also demonstrate how to create highly textural confetti backgrounds and her technique for a clean finish. This is a unique opportunity to try a fabric painting technique without making a large investment in brushes, textile paints, silk, etc.

Animal Artistry through Appliqué
David M. Taylor
David Taylor’s quilts are often mistaken as paintings, and that makes him very happy. His works are adapted from photographs, and his technique evolved from his love of jigsaw puzzles. In this workshop, students will learn the secrets to his craft. Topics include his unique pattern drawing method and freezer paper appliqué technique. A strong emphasis is placed on fabric selection (bring as much as you can to the class) and using those fabrics wisely. Students are required to submit image options in advance of the workshop.

Color Theory for Quilters
Explore the power of color and design as you create a beautiful hummingbird quilt. While all participants will work from the same pattern, each quilt will be uniquely personalized through individual fabric and color selections. Throughout the workshop, Cole will guide students through the fundamentals of color theory, including hue, value, intensity, and color relationships. Learn how to organize fabrics by color and value, use grayscale tools to evaluate contrast, understand the impact of solids versus prints, and apply the color wheel to make confident design decisions. Bring their own fabrics or purchase a carefully curated fabric kit. Through hands-on exploration and expert guidance, gain practical skills for selecting fabrics and creating visually dynamic quilts. By the end of the workshop, every student will have a one-of-a-kind hummingbird quilt top that reflects their personal artistic vision.

Design from Photos to Imagination
Transform your own photographs into bold, graphic landscape quilts in this immersive multi-day workshop with quilt artist Vicki Conley. Students will learn how to move from photo inspiration to original quilt design—without needing advanced drawing skills or perfect precision piecing. Vicki will demonstrate how to combine multiple reference photos into one strong composition while simplifying complex imagery into powerful graphic shapes. Students will explore tracing techniques using clear sheet protectors or tracing paper, as well as digital design methods using the iPad app Procreate. Discussions on value, color, and fabric selection will help students create depth, movement, and visual impact in their work. Students will practice both Turned Edge Machine Piecing and Fussy Piecing techniques while constructing a simple rock study before beginning work on their own original landscape quilt.

Jane Sassaman
Leaves in the Breeze
I love interesting shapes, especially leaf shapes! So I have designed several leaf patterns (all in small, medium and large sizes) for appliqué. They are independent designs so they can be used for many other projects when you get home, too. In this class each student will get the pack of patterns and set about designing their own unique quilt top using Appliqué Sassaman Style techniques. The pattern includes burr oak, red oak, acorns, a maple with whirligigs and several ginkgo leaves. It also contains some swirly spirals to add the “breeze” to your creation. We will also practice designing your own spiral. You can use any combination of leaves, in your choice of colors, and arrange them into an exciting individual composition. And feel free to create new patterns for different leaves and shapes.
